Gardener’s Market opens with plenty of greens, music and crafts

It was funded over 20 years ago by a handful of people and a card table. Now the Cache Valley Gardener’s Market is the second most popular market in the state. The 2013 Gardener’s Market opens today at a new location: Horsheshoe Park in Willow Park, close to the Willow Park Zoo.

On KVNU’s Cross Talk program Thursday, Market Manager Mary Lane said the market features locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as hand and home-made crafts from local artisans and entrepreneurs. She anticipates an excited group for their first market of the season.

“There should be plenty of greens. A lot of our growers have high tunnels now, so we’re looking forward to that,” Lane said. “There should be plenty of starter plants for your garden.”

And Lane said there will be more than just fruits and vegetables on display.

“There will be a band playing and all our crafts people will be excited to show what they’ve been working on this winter. Should be lots of excitement and plenty of parking.”

Lane encouraged everyone to come check out the new location, but also wanted to highlight a future Gardener’s Market. Saturday, June 8 has been designated as Children’s Day.

“Usually a lot of groups support us. They’ll bring in a lot of different crafts that the children can make,” Lane explained. “Even that day the band that we have play offers children instruments and they get together and play in a parade.

“Off and on there are a lot of things at the Cache Valley Gardener’s Market that children can do.”

Lane said the Gardener’s Market goes from May 11 to October 19 and it is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Because of its new location 500 West will be closed to all through traffic between 700 South and 800 South on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October 19.
