Will Davis and Kerwynn Williams drafted, three others sign with NFL teams

LOGAN— For the second consecutive year, Utah State University was represented well in the NFL draft as former cornerback Will Davis and former running back Kerwynn Williams were each selected.

The All-American Davis was the first USU player to hear his name called as he went on Friday, April 26, the second day of the draft in the third round (No. 93 overall) to the Miami Dolphins.

After a relatively quiet junior year at Utah State, Davis – a Spokane, Wash. native – quickly became a fan favorite because of his play and his attitude. He also caught the eye of NFL teams and scouts as he recorded an interception in each of USU’s last five regular season games and finished the season second in the nation in passes defensed.

Davis was tabbed to the All-WAC first team as he finished with 17 pass breakups, five interceptions, and 64 tackles. He is the 18th USU player to be selected within the first three rounds of the draft.

Never one to shy away from social media, Davis posted this message to Twitter after the draft:

@WillieD_effect “I’m officially a Miami Dolphin. Couldn’t be more happy to hear my name. And thank you to everyone for the kind words.

#LoveLife #LiveLucky”

Williams, a Las Vegas native, had to wait nearly all of Saturday – the final day of the draft – to hear his name called, but that call did come. The 2012 honorable mention All-American was picked by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round with the 230th pick.

With the selection of Williams, Utah State became the only college football program in the country to have three running backs drafted in the past two seasons. Both Robert Turbin (Seattle Seahawks, fourth round) and Michael Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers, seventh round) were drafted in 2012.

As a senior, Williams stepped in and amassed more than 2200 yards (1,512 rushing, 697 receiving) as he ranked 10th in the nation with 171.2 all-purpose yards per game. He capped off his career by garnering MVP honors in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl after rushing for 235 yards and three touchdowns on just 18 carries.

Following his selections, Williams had this to say via Twitter:

@kerWINning25 “Truly blessed today. The look of excitement on my families faces was well worth every bit of the wait. Proud to be a colt!! #buildthemoster”

Along with Davis and Williams, other USU players had hopes of being drafted as well. Though they didn’t hear their name called, it didn’t take long for a couple of them to find out some good news.

Almost immediately after the draft ended, former USU wide receiver Matt Austin announced via Twitter that he had signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks. He will be joining both Turbin and former USU linebacker Bobby Wagner who were both selected by the Seahawks last season.

Former Aggie defensive lineman Al Lapuaho and receiver Chuck Jacobs also received some good news as Lapuaho signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams and Jacobs signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers. All told, that makes five members of USU’s 2012 record-setting team that are now part of the NFL.
