Well-known farmer, auctioneer and member of the Cache County Farm Bureau Board of Directors Lane Parker says he is sad to know that young people know little or nothing about what goes on at a farm. He says Farm Bureau members hope to help change that with programs like their annual Farm Safety Training and Tractor Certification Course coming up this week.

Parker says the training starts Friday, April 26 at 5 p.m. and continues Saturday at the Utah State Agricultural Systems, Technology and Education building, 1498 North 800 East in Logan.

On <a href=”http://610kvnu.com/assets/podcaster/328/2013_04_22_328_10249_2867.mp3″ target=”_blank”>KVNU’s Crosstalk show Monday</a>, Parker said the course will provide  some help in every aspect of farm safety.

“If a tractor breaks down you have to know how to fix that tractor, if you can, or at least know how much you can do,” Parker said. “So we cover everything from electricity to how to hook up a big tractor to a piece of equipment and then handling the livestock.”

Parker said there are many different things to be aware of when dealing with farm animals.

“(We’ll cover) how to walk in to a pen with animals in it and to watch out. Is one of them going to be mean? If its a Holstein cow she’s probably going to come up and lick you to death.”

Or, he said, it is a whole different thing if it is a cow with a new calf beside it.

Parker said the course is a great help for members of a farm family and other young people who want to work on a farm.
