LOGAN— In the current economy the numbers of home buyers dealing with foreclosure procedures have been increasing, but the USU Family Life Center is there to help. Lucas Martin, Director of the center’s housing and financial counseling, said his office is a HUD certified counseling agency.
Last year, the center served more than 600 families, helping them prepare for home ownership or help people resolve budgeting, credit and debt issues.
On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Friday, Martin said his agency offers free pre-purchase and foreclosure counseling, although there’s a charge for reverse mortgage counseling. He said the earlier you go for help the better chance there is for success.
“We had an individual that was a single parent with a couple children, so one income, a very limited income, and they had a significant amount of debt, in the neighborhood of $20,000-$30,000,” Martin said. “Over the course of a couple of years, and through using debt elimination techniques and through changing their behavior a little bit – how they spent, and prioritizing how they made payments – they were able to pay all of that off.”
Martin said services are offered in Spanish at the Family Life Center, where Marriage and Family Therapy is also available. For more information call 797-9108.
