Sen. Osmond concerned about adequate education funding

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah legislature will soon learn just how much money it is going to have to work with for next year’s budget. Sen. Aaron Osmond, R-Salt Lake City, said he is concerned about what a federal sequestration could mean to Utah because states must have a balanced budget.

On KVNU’s For the People program Wednesday, Osmond said he is one lawmaker who does not feel public education is sufficiently funded.

“We do need to find a way to increase revenue to meet the demand and need in public education,” Osmond said. “We are dealing with a lot of demand, growth in students, and we have remained at 51st in the nation on a per-pupil spending.

“But, with that being said, we are also fifth or sixth in the nation as far as the percent of our budget that is spent on education.”

Osmond said next to public education he is concerned about the health care needs in the state of Utah.
