Sheriff Nelson defends signing gun letter

LOGAN — He has been criticized by some, praised by others. Tuesday night, Cache County Sheriff Lynn Nelson spoke to county residents, defending a letter he signed, stating he and other Utah Sheriff’s would defend Utahan’s right to bear arms.  Nelson says, taking guns away is not the cure all for stopping crimes and stopping homicides.

“When this letter was proposed in January at a Sheriff’s meeting,” says Nelson. “It wasn’t necessarily in response to anything in particular he (President Obama) said.  Other than the philosophy that kind of came out of it, that if we take away guns our violent crime issues are going to go away.” Nelson says, “well, you can take away my fork but I’m still going to be fat because I’m going to use my spoon.”

Nelson knows this is an emotional issue right now. He and other Sheriffs believe there is more to the violence argument than guns. He says law enforcement’s philosophy has changed over the years. Back in the 90’s, it was believed that more police on the street would reduce the number of crimes committed.  Nelson explains that now they know, the only way to keep crime under control is to work with citizens and have a good relationship.  Nelson says that relationship between law enforcement and citizens is what makes Cache County such a great place to live.
