Neighbors prevent car fire from spreading

LOGAN – Quick thinking neighbors likely saved a Logan home from going up in flames Thursday afternoon after a vehicle caught fire at 101 Meadow Circle. At approximately 12:45 p.m. Rachelle Laursen and her children were having lunch when they smelled smoke and heard a pop outside. When she saw flames coming out of her 2001 Ford Expedition, Laursen quickly grabbed her children and ran out of the home in her stocking feet.

Neighbors called 911 and grabbed their own fire extinguishers to try and knock down the flames before fire crews arrived. The vehicle was parked close enough to the home that if the fire would not have been put out quickly it could have spread to the home. There was, however, a small explosion from the fire in the SUV. There were no injuries.

Logan City Fire Marshall Craig Humphreys says the fire was contained to the engine block and crews were able to respond quickly enough to prevent the fire from spreading. He says that the vehicle had been driven earlier in the day without problem or any noticeable issues. Humphreys says an investigation into the exact cause of the fire is continuing.
