SMITHFIELD— With its season hanging in the balance, the Sky View boy’s basketball team responded in a big way as the Bobcats blasted the Roy Royals on Senior Night, 70-33.
The Bobcats entered the night tied with valley-rival Logan and Box Elder in Region 5 action, as all three teams were vying for two postseason spots. Facing a Roy team that had just one region loss and is led by one of the top players in the state in Brekkott Chapman, it was Sky View that dominated from start to finish.
Led by seniors Ty Nielsen and Matt Dewey, the Bobcats raced out to a 23-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Royals never eclipsed nine points in a single quarter as SV continued to pour it on. By the time the half rolled around, Sky View had already opened up a 20-point lead, 38-18.
Nielsen led the Bobcats with a game-high 17 points, while Dewey chipped in 16. Jalen Moore and Kamaehu Matthias also scored in double figures for SV, as they each tallied 10 points on the night. Chapman was the leading Royals scorer with nine points.
The second half was more of the same, as Sky View outscored Roy by eight points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth en route to the 37-point shellacking. With the win, and losses by both Box Elder and Logan, the Bobcats lock of the third spot in the region standings and head to the 4A State Tournament, where they will face Timpview on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 9:10 p.m.
