Lady Bobcats advance to state semis with 62-48 stomping of Bountiful

SV senior guard McKenley Hellstern brings the ball up the court during the Bobcats game against Salem Hills in the first round of the 4A State Tournament. The Bobcats defeated Bountiful in the quarterfinals on Feb. 21, 2013 to advance to a semifinal matchup against Timpview.

SALT LAKE CITY— The Sky View girl’s basketball team scored the first 11 points of the game, held a 15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, and coasted to a 62-48 win over Bountiful in the quarterfinals of the 4A State Tournament Thursday.

It was the Bobcats second victory over the Braves this season, 64-42.

Sky View was led once again by double-double machine Tara Goldman who finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Sophomore Lindsey Jensen and senior McKenley Hellstern joined Goldman in double digits, as they scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Following the lopsided opening stanza, the competition picked up as the game got sloppier. Both teams struggled with turnovers, but after mustering just two points and zero field goals in the opening quarter, Bountiful put 17 points on the board in the second quarter. The Bobcats added 18 of their own, however, and carried a 33-19 advantage into the break.

After the intermission, the third quarter saw much of the same as the Braves edged the Bobcats, 17-16, but still trailed by 13, 49-36, heading into the final eight minutes.

Early in the fourth quarter, Bountiful cut the lead to single digits momentarily, but the Bobcats quickly pushed lead back to the 10-14 point range, which they maintained until the end of the game.

With the win, Sky View advances to face Timpview (the same team their male counterparts will face in the state tournament next week) in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. The T-Birds rallied to beat Orem on a buzzer-beater Thursday afternoon.

Friday’s SV game will be carried live in the Cache Valley area on KLGN (1390 AM/103.3 FM), and the audio will also be available for streaming on the web via 1390klgn.com. That game will tipoff at 4 p.m. If the Bobcats beat Timpview, they will play in the state championship game, which will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. The other semifinal game features a pair of unbeaten in Springville and Bonneville.
