Cache Valley cities advise residents to keep faucets running

Multiple cities throughout Cache Valley have issued warnings to their residents over the past two days to keep at least one faucet in the house running at a slow drip to avoid freezing pipes.

There have been multiple instances where people’s water lines have frozen between the meter and the main water line because of the extremely cold temperatures over the past two weeks.

In Trenton, four homes in the last 24 hours suffered water line breaks because of the freezing temperatures and hoses will need to be run above ground to supply water to the home until the ground thaws enough to re-dig trenches.

Officials from North Logan, Logan City, Preston, Trenton and Providence have all issued warnings on this issue. Temperatures are expected to increase with a storm front moving in to the area Thursday but because temperatures have been so cold for so long the frost line has gone deeper than normal, causing water lines to freeze and some to burst.

City officials are encouraging their residents to leave a small stream of water in at least one tap inside the home to avoid freezing water lines. In Providence, residents there are encouraged to continue this practice until the area experiences five consecutive days with low temperatures above 15 degrees. Providence residents will not be billed for any excess water charges.

Additionally, Logan City reminds home owners that the water stream from faucets should not run thicker than the size of a pencil. Also, wrapping pipes, turning up heat and opening cabinets below sinks can help prevent pipes from freezing.
