Group says Utah trailing US in earning degrees

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A Utah higher education group says the gender gap for college degree earners in the state is shrinking, but the state trails the rest of the country in earning degrees.

The Utah Women and Education Initiative released the findings on Tuesday.

The group says women receive only 47 percent of all bachelor’s degrees in Utah, which is the lowest percentage of all 50 states.

But the data says among younger adults, Utah women are obtaining degrees at the same rate as men, if not higher.

The report also shows the number of Utah men and women graduating lags behind the rest of the country.

The state’s goal is to have 66 percent of Utah residents aged 25-64 earn at least a one-year degree by 2020. The state is at 43 percent now.
