Local lawmakers trying to limit metal theft

LOGAN— With the 2013 Utah Legislative session opening later this month, local lawmakers have been getting their priority bills in order. District Three Republican Representative Jack Draxler of North Logan said one of his bills would tighten up the state’s metal theft statute.

“We have farmers and construction people, and even municipalities who are just being robbed blind by metal thieves who steal copper, aluminum, and now they’re going into farmer’s fields and knocking off their sprinkler heads and trying to recycle the brass,” Draxler said. “We need better tools to track these thieves and try to apprehend them, and also discourage them from doing this.”

Draxler said although there is already a metal theft statute on the books, it really needs to be tightened.
