Freshman Davis tabbed USU Athlete of the Week

LOGAN- Utah State men’s basketball player Marcel Davis has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Dec. 9, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

Davis, a freshman guard from American Fork, Utah (American Fork HS) scored a career-high 21 points in leading Utah State to an 86-57 home win against Western Oregon last weekend. Davis, who played just 20 minutes in the game, was 9-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range, to go along with a career-high five rebounds and a career-high tying three assists. Those 21 points are the most by an Aggie freshman since Tai Wesley had 24 points on Feb. 22, 2008. He not only made his first three-pointer of his Aggie career, but topped his previous season-high single-game scoring output of eight points on three-pointers alone Saturday night. Entering Saturday’s game, Davis had just 11 points total for the season and nearly doubled that with his 21-point output Saturday.

This is Davis’ first USU Athlete of the Week honor, as well as the second-straight for a men’s basketball player and the third award this season, as junior guard Preston Medlin garnered the accolade last week as well as on Nov. 12.
