LOGAN— In the course of his political life, Mitt Romney has blatantly, unabashedly and unapologetically lied about his positions on a wide array of important issues.

He has professed to have said things he never said…and vice versa. He has claimed to support things he never supported…and vice versa. And he changes his positions frequently, sometimes denying he ever believed the contrary to his new mantra. And while he does this, Republicans and conservatives still defend him as the right man to be President of the United States. Why would they do this?

Because they hate Barack Obama.

On Monday, in one of the most disgraceful and shameful political acts I ever witnessed, Romney stated that he would, as president, make sure American troops were out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014 – a position Romney once castigated President Obama for extolling. And where was the right wing outrage at this?

Throughout the campaign, Romney has warned that it was dangerous to tell America’s enemies when we would leave Afghanistan – as if we could move out all of our forces overnight whilst the terrorist grabbed some shut-eye. He criticized this move ceaselessly. During one of the Republican primary debates hosted by Fox News, Romney’s criticism that a timeline was an act of an idiot community organizer drew the applause of Mitt’s fellow “severe conservatives”. Why aren’t those same war hawks ripping Romney’s change of heart?

Because they hate Barack Obama.

Remember the auto bailout? It worked. Detroit was saved. Jobs were saved. The American car has maintained its status as an icon. And instead of us importing cheap, crappy cars from China, they buy solid, dependable cars from us. Mitt Romney criticized both Presidents Bush and Obama for writing those bailout checks. Mitt said, “If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye.”

Conservatives and Libertarians go bonkers over the fact that the bailout was an unquestioned success. They cannot come to terms with the fact that their main thesis regarding government intervention was squashed under the weight of a healthy assembly line of SUVs.

And now Mitt, wooing Ohio and Michigan, says he did not really want Detroit to fail. At the last debate he spouted off some claptrap saying what he really wanted was a structured bankruptcy where the Big Three would…(click)…and the Giants are National League champions!

Where are the super-wonks ready to pounce on Mitt for his betrayal of the true conservative principle of letting companies fail to teach them a lesson? Why was their silence so profound Tuesday morning?

Because they hate Barack Obama.

Mitt Romney does not have one firmly held political conviction in his well-coiffed head. He is a packaged, processed Chicken McNugget of political insincerity. He says he is a Mormon – but he tries to be a Jedi. Waving his finger in front of an audience and telling them, “My health care plan always included pre-existing conditions.”

His campaign stump speeches should be followed by playing the song “It Wasn’t Me” by Shaggy. No matter how much tangible and empirical proof is laid in front of him regarding his own words from his own mouth, the denials come frequently and emphatically.

And Republicans pretend to believe him. They want to believe him. They NEED to believe him. His supporters brainwash themselves that he must be honest, even though he isn’t. Why would so many ignore such an obvious fraud? Why would anyone excuse Mitt’s pathology and say, with a somewhat believable voice, that he is the right man to be president? Why would anyone let this man’s lies and ideological ambiguities stand as gospel?

Because they hate Barack Obama.

I fully understand those who find President Obama to be a failure as a president. I can readily empathize with those who can’t support the president because of strong ideological differences. To them I ask the following questions: Who is Mitt Romney? Which one idea that Mitt has shared with the world makes your American flag fly a little stiffer? Which position on what issue do you believe he is willing to put on the Armor of Reagan and support to the bitter end?

Regardless of my feelings regarding social conservatism, I always believed it was a philosophy held on rock solid, unshakable beliefs. There is right and wrong – and to stand firm on the right and lose was always nobler and spoke to one’s character better than selling out for political interests. When did social conservatism die? Why did social conservatives turn into the hypocrites they once vehemently opposed and demonized?

Because they hate Barack Obama.
