Sky View girl’s tennis finishes second at Region 5 Tournament, MC and Logan further back

LOGAN– After a strong performance on day one of the Region 5 tournament, the Sky View girl’s tennis team had an equally strong day two to wrap up a second-place finish behind champion Bonneville Thursday at Utah State.

“I think we came off (day one) getting everyone qualified for state,” Sky View head coach Melissa Stuart said. “To have everyone playing first or second, or third or fourth is really positive. It’s a lot of tension and emotion to play all these matches in two days.”

Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Kaitlyn Slade jumped out to a two game to none lead in first set before Bonneville’s Hannah Jones stormed back for the 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) victory. Trailing 6-5 in the second set, Slade fought off two match points to force the tie-break, and a third match point during the tie-break before Jones sealed the deal.

In the No. 3 singles bracket, Kassidy Smith fell in straight sets to Bonneville’s Maren Connolly, 6-1, 6-1 for the second of the Bobcats three runner-up finishes. The No. 2 doubles team of Nicole Cullimore and Rachel Wilkey fell to Box Elder’s Caitlyn Glauser and Whitney Smith 3-6, 6-7 (3-7) to help Sky View secure the second-place team finish.

“To pull through and take a solid second was really positive,” Stuart said. “Coming in we were tied for second, so that was really good. Everybody fought to the end.”

Anna Dehlin will join Slade and Smith in representing the Bobcats at the state tournament, while Kierra Maiden and Kendyl Thornton will join Cullimore and Wilkey in the doubles brackets.

Valley-rivals Mountain Crest and Logan finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the tournament and each will send representatives to the state tournament. The Mustangs had three singles players and one doubles team qualify, while the Grizzlies will send one singles player and one doubles team.

The state tournament will take place Oct. 4 and 6 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
