An early Friday morning fire destroyed at least 1500 tons of hay but firefighters from Cache County’s north end managed to save a nearby modern hay barn at 3986 North 2400 West in Benson
. The fire was reported shortly after midnight and Assistant Smithfield Fire Chief Mike Weibel says it was dawn before the flames were under control.
Several tons of hay were pulled away from the barn to prevent further spread of the fire. Those bales were left to smolder throughout the morning.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Portions of 2400 West were closed down as fire crews fought the blaze but the road has been re-opened.
Weibel says units from Smithfield, Trenton, Richmond, Newton, Lewiston and the Cache County Fire District all assisted in extinguishing the haystack fire.
