Blind piano prodigy playing in Logan

Since discovering the piano three years ago 15-year old Hawaiian-born Kuha’o Case has taught himself to play both the piano and the organ. He has been blind since he was two months old.

A Cache Valley family, the Thunells, is helping Kuha’o prepare to share his special gift with the world.

Kuha’o Case will perform in a free concert Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Kent Concert Hall on the Utah State University campus. Everyone is invited to attend.

“He came to Utah (in April) to realize one of his dreams which was to play the organ at both the LDS Conference Center and the Salt Lake Tabernacle,” said Andy Thunell.

“My aunt lives on the big island of Hawaii where Kuha’o lives and she was instrumental in getting him up here to Utah to realize that dream and while he was here he stayed with my parents here in the valley.”

During Thunell’s first encounter with Kuha’o he asked the young man to play a song that Kuha’o had never heard before. Kuha’o listened to a recorded version of the song then sat at the keyboard and played it exactly.

“Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw that day. I was just blown away. You can see him on the Internet but to meet him in person you come to know what a vibrant, fun-loving, happy boy he is. He really wants to serve others with this musical gift of his. He truly enjoys knowing he is touching other people’s lives with his gift.”

Landau Eugene Murphy, the 2011 winner of “America’s Got Talent” is presenting a concert in Ogden, July 21 and Kuha’o has been signed as his opening act.

“We’re so excited for this opportunity,” said Thunell. “It was set up through a friend who is promoting that concert and Mr. Murphy has arranged for Kuha’o to play a 20-minute set to start the concert.

Supporters are using a funding platform on the Internet, , to help raise money to buy a piano for Kuha’o and to record a CD of his music. The goal is to raise $30,000 but it must be completed by July 21 or all of the money will be refunded.
