Utah residents to get $3.7M in health care rebates

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal officials say Utah residents will receive $3.7 million in rebates this year from health insurance companies as part of the Affordable Care Act.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the rebates will average $85 per family and go to 43,400 Utah families.

The health care law requires insurance companies to spend at least 80 percent of premiums on medical care and quality improvement. The rest can go toward administrative costs and advertising.

Those who do not meet the 80-20 rule must provide rebates by Aug. 1.

Beginning this year insurers must notify customers how their premiums have been spent.
