Yard sale, silent auction planned for boy fighting cancer

Nico Oakeson was considered a pretty normal first grader living with his family in North Logan in March when he awoke in the middle of the night screaming someone was sticking a knife in his eye. Later a life-threatening tumor was found behind his eye, a number of surgeries followed and then he entered chemotherapy. Because of complications, which have followed, Nico is struggling to walk and eat and his kidneys have started to malfunction.

Friends and neighbors have organized a yard sale and fundraiser for Saturday, June 23 to help with Nico’s medical costs. It is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the English Language Center.

Julie Allen is the fundraising chairperson.

“There are two big things we are looking for right now: first, for people to come and just enjoy the fundraiser on Saturday. In addition to that, we are seeking yard sale donations. They can bring them to the English Language Center (1544 N. 200 W.) on Friday, June 22 starting at 3 p.m.”

She said organizers are seeking clothing, furniture in good condition and other items normally found at a yard sale such as decorations, crafts, Christmas items plus items for a bake sale, but nothing refrigerated.

“It is a yard sale but we will also have hot dogs and soda pop available for purchase and a silent auction because businesses have donated everything from scenic flights over the valley to car washes and theater tickets and other items to come and bid on.

“There is quite a high remission rate with this kind of tumor,” said Allen. “But Nico has had some complications from the chemotherapy that were unexpected. That has created a financial and emotional drain.”

Julie Allen will answer other questions at 213-0585 and more information is available at facebook.com/projectnico.
