Fogging for mosquitos now under way in Cache County

A new mosquito season has begun. Cache Mosquito Abatement District (CMAD) workers are checking areas of standing water for mosquito larvae and are finding high numbers present. Larvacide is being applied to attack the mosquitoes before they become airborne.

“It only takes a few days of warm weather for the larva to mature and become adults,” Richard Rigby, field manager for CMAD said. “And the recent spells of warmer than normal weather have brought a big jump in adult mosquito reports.” CMAD plans to fog in the evenings beginning Tuesday, May 29th. The schedule may change due to weather conditions, surveillance results, and citizen reports of high mosquito numbers; please check the website (www.cachemosquito.com/fogging.html) weekly.

Tuesday: Mendon, Richmond, Cove, NW Smithfield, Hyrum, Avon, Newton, Clarkston, Cache Junction

Wednesday: Wellsville (north), Heritage Center, Gun Range, Benson, Providence, Hyde Park, North Logan

Thursday: Wellsville (south), Mt. Sterling, Lewiston, Amalga, Trenton, Cornish

Beginning Monday, June 4th, Petersboro, SW and East Smithfield, Benson, Nibley, and Millville will be fogged. Please call (435) 764-6839 to request service. All areas are being treated with larvacide, and traps are monitoring adult mosquito numbers.

There are practical measures that citizens can take to help protect them from mosquitoes that might carry West Nile virus: Drain standing water around your house. Dress in long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors between dusk and dawn to prevent mosquito bites. Wear an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
