Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff for the summer and traditionally it’s a very busy weekend at campgrounds and picnic areas in Utah’s national forests. U.S. Forest Service Spokeswoman Kathy Jo Pollock says most of the campgrounds are open but higher-elevation campgrounds, roads and trails may still be snow covered or muddy leaving the areas vulnerable to damage.
Pollock says safety is always a concern. She says rivers, streams and creeks are running very high and fast and are extremely dangerous. Everyone is reminded to be careful and keep a mindful eye on children and pets while recreating in those areas. When hiking, always carry extra water and take along a coat and something to make a fire with in case you get stuck on a mountain for the night and in case weather turns bad.
