USU College Republican: attacks against Hatch unfounded

Two years ago FreedomWorks, a conservative Tea Party activist group, led the charge that defeated former U.S. Senator Bob Bennett. However, Sen. Orrin Hatch supporters say the incumbent six-term senator organized soon after Bennett’s defeat and have been prepared for the attacks. On KVNU’s For the People program Monday, Rhett Wilkinson, of the Utah State University College Republicans, said he thinks Hatch will be able to keep his seat. Wilkiinson said FreedomWorks has made outlandish claims against Hatch, such as one that suggests Hatch is responsible for the nation’s $14 trillion debt. “He voted seven times to increase the debt ceiling in 36 years,” Wilkinson said. “Out of the thousands of votes he’s made on the floor and votes he’s made in general pertaining to finance I don’t think that’s a very good argument to make.” Additionally, Wilkinson said that FreedomWorks’ focus on Hatch is misguided and they are missing the real target. “They’re spending four times as much on Hatch than they are on Obama.” Several Hatch challengers will be in Logan Wednesday evening for the Cache County Republican Convention.
