Fire crews from Smithfield and Cache Fire District responded to an out of control grass fire in Benson Monday afternoon. A statement from the Cache Fire District stated the fire at 4744 North 4700 West was started by an individual who obtained a burn permit but lost control due to heavy, dry vegetation. The fire burned approximately five acres. The Cache County Fire District cautions that vegetation is extremely dry this year. Those who obtain burn permits must make sure to follow the guidelines, including: the person in control of the fire must be 18 or older, there must be a water source present at all times, the fire must be out before dark, no burning of trash or construction material, and fires that become a nuisance will be put out.
