Canal reconstruction project could begin in October

Construction of the Logan Northern Canal Reconstruction Project is moving closer. Tuesday night Logan Public Works Director Mark Nielson told the city council that construction could begin as early as October. He says the county will soon name a project management consultant. The design team will be doing its work from May until about October. Nielsen says hopefully the entire project will be finished by the spring of 2014.”Our hope is that beginning October 1st they will start that construction process on that box culvert or piping from the Logan River in the canyon all the way out to 1500 North,” Nielsen told the council. “Then there’s a pipeline that will go down 1500 North to the lower canal, Logan and Northern Canal, then a smaller pipeline that will come all the way back to (400) North.”In the meantime, he says many difficult decisions will have to be made that have to do with such issues as storm water. The purpose of the project is to restore the safe delivery of water that was conveyed by the Logan Northern Canal before the 2009 landslide that killed three people on Logan’s Canyon Road. Nielsen says there are still homes to be purchased on Canyon Road for the pending project.
