USU design team wins 3rd place in Disney design competition

A team of design students from Utah State University placed third in the annual Walt Disney Imagineering ImagiNations Design Competition on Friday. The USU team, comprised of Jason Cooper, Adam Dambrink and Philip Le Goubin, was asked to present designs based on a futuristic Disney attraction on the moon in the year 3011.The USU team designed a Disney Galactic Cruiseline: “The Oneiro” which provided seven-star luxury while exploring space. The cruiseline also allowed its passengers to experience various levels of gravity, whether at restaurants, at sporting events, or in their own rooms.According to a press release, first place and “Best in Show” was awarded to North Carolina State University for their project “The Mind of Molly Mouse” (a descendant of Mickey Mouse). Second place was awarded to Carnegie Mellon University for their “Create the Night Finale,” an interactive nighttime spectacular and experience.The top three placed teams were awarded cash prizes with the first place team receiving $3,000. An additional $1,000 grant was awarded to the first place team.The competition took place at Imagineering headquarters in Glendale, California from January 30 to February 3. Participants made professional presentations to a judging panel, inverviewed for paid internships and got behind-the-scenes tours of Disneyland fro the viewpoint of Imagineers.The competition encourages university students to consider careers in creative and technical fields including digital arts, engineering and architecture. Twenty-one college students from six universities were finalists for the competition.
