It looks like costs will soon be going up for weekend and holiday burials in the Logan Cemetery. On Tuesday, Logan Parks and Recreation Department Director Russ Akina told the city council that there were 66 Saturday burials in 2010 which represents about 30 percent of the 230 total burials for the year. He said the total number of weekend burials for 2011 was 239 and 65 were Saturday burials.”What we’re doing now,” Akina said, “is we’re rotating shift schedules with full-time staff but having to supplement the need for addressing Saturday burials from work that would otherwise be done during the week with part-time, non-benefited staff. In about a year’s time that equates to about $14,000 in additional staffing costs that we need to cover.”Akina recommended that for residents the weekend burial rate should go from $525 to $710, an increase of $185. For non-residents the weekend increase would be $265, going from $710 to $975. A decision is expected to be made at the next council meeting.
