Utah State vs. Fresno StateJan. 5, 2012Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill…”Good start to league. We were excited that we came out and did what we needed to do. We shot a good percentage and guarded them pretty well percentage wise. There were some breakdowns, but percentage wise we defended the three well. We had some guys step up and play well; I think Kyisean Reed had his best night overall. To get 10 rebounds, we have been on him hard to rebound the ball and our perimeter guys if you look at their assists to turnovers, it was such a concern early so I was really pleased. We have been charting what we call “extra-passes,” and they avoid a down and back at the end of practice if they have enough extra passes. They have taken that to heart, they try to share the ball and make good decisions. All you have to do is look at Brockeith Pane’s line to see that he is trying to be selective and trying to have a good turnover to assist ratio. E.J. Farris coming off the bench and did a solid job. I was extremely worried about Fresno State; they were coming off a number of wins. They throttled Boise State the other night, and we knew they were going to come in and play. Now it is on to the next one.”Junior Forward Kyisean Reed…”We had Kevin Olekaibe coming in, and we made it a defensive assignment to make sure he didn’t kill us by himself. It wasn’t me individually, but it’s just knowing personnel really. We know that he can get hot, so we had to come off the screens and show a little more. We didn’t do that much early on, and he got hot real quick so we had make sure he didn’t do that in the second half and then rebound better. Because we handled the screens better, we were in better position to rebound more. The bigs didn’t have to come out to the perimeter as much. Coach Morrill knows what to say to me to get me going. Not just me, but the whole team sometimes loses that edge mentally in the game. Coach has convinced me that no one can run with me if I choose to run, so that’s one of the things I’m doing, trying to run all the time on those breaks. We know Nevada is picked to win the league, so this is going to be fun. They’re long, they’re athletic, they’re quick.” Fresno State Head Coach Rodney Terry…”We weren’t able to get a stop there. It was tough luck in the first half there. They made a couple of huge shots there at the end of the shot clock. They were really key possessions. We climbed back up there, right to within two possessions, but then we gave up some shots. But more than that, they scored, and we didn’t get shots in.”
