What is the political future for Congressman Jim Matheson, D-District 2? Utah State University Political Science Department Chairman Mike Lyons says a lot of people are pondering that question. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Tuesday, Lyons said re-districting by Republicans has made Matheson much more vulnerable for defeat than ever before. One option for Matheson, Lyons said, is challenging Republican Governor Gary Herbert. Lyons said many Democrats would love to see Matheson head their ticket. “Herbert is not particularly vulnerable but he’s not a particularly dynamic campaigner,” Lyons said. “We do have a recession in Utah, it’s not as severe in Utah as it is nationally, obviously. “But any incumbent governor running for re-election in a recession potentially could be defeated. I’m sure they are polling and trying to assess what the chances are to defeat Herbert.” Lyons says now that Matheson has said he does not plan to challenge U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch he expects Hatch will be re-elected to a seventh six-year term.
