“A tragedy of errors.” That is how Logan Municipal Council chairman Herm Olsen is referring to a controversial action that allowed a high rise apartment project to be approved near 1000 North 600 East. Olsen, who is running for a second term in the November 8 election, said the planning department worked several years on a 460-page land code that went through a workshop and public hearing. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday, Olsen said before the final vote an administrator thought it would be a good idea to include the additional parcel for a high density rezone. “He inserted a one page map which altered the boundary of the high-density zone,” Olsen explained. “Unfortunately, (he) didn’t take it back through the neighborhoods, didn’t notify anyone else really, just thought it would be a good addition. “So when the council was presented the final product for vote the vote was four to one to pass the land development code with that new insertion that nobody knew about.” Olsen says he was the one who voted ‘No’ and it was because he felt that with such a comprehensive proposal it would have been helpful to have more public input.
