Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes “It was a big game for us, two teams that have had a lot of heartbreak this year. I feel for Coach Andersen because we went through kind of the same process. They are one of the best football teams that we have played all year. Utah State is a fine team. They are well coached, played hard and are solid fundamentally. I can’t say enough good things about that team, but we played hard and had some plays go our way and we were fortunate. It was good to get some breaks for a change.” On switching quarterbacks “I could tell that Nick (Isham) had kind of lost his confidence a bit, and you got to give Utah State credit for doing that defensively. Their corners played extremely well, they did a great job on tackling and they didn’t give us a lot of big plays. We had a hard time operating and executing at the levels we needed to, but Colby (Cameron) came in and gave us that spark and brought the ball down the field a little bit more and we were lucky to get that spark.” Utah State head coach Gary Andersen “We found a way to lose another game. I don’t have a lot of other things to say than that. We knew exactly what we were in for and that didn’t change a bit from film. They got that interception for a touchdown, then we get our hands on three balls and can’t pick them off. You have to find a way to be able to make those plays. Both offenses weren’t really factors in this game. I’m very, very disappointed. We have a lot of this season left. It’s a fight for these seniors. It’s a fight for a lot of things. We have a bye week and we’ll take a long, hard look at everything and see exactly what we can do better as a football team to see what we can do better from A to Z.” On not going for the fourth and one with five minutes to play in the game “I’m not in that, that’s not my position so who knows. He was more worried about getting the defense one more stop. We have three good backs, I don’t think you can sit there and say we’re through. Robert Turbin has been more of a power back, more than Kerwynn (Williams) or Michael (Smith) in third and one situations. It wouldn’t have mattered who was there when you’re running around a cinder block wall.” On the team’s frustration “Obviously, there are going to be frustrations with the kids. Whenever a bye week comes we use it and make the best of the situations. Obviously, there’s something there. Tough team, yes. Physical team, yes. Played hard, yes. All those are checks. At this point there is something. We need to be tougher mentally. If we are opportunistic, we may not even get in those situations. It could have been worse. We dropped the punt on the 1-yard line and were fortunate to fall on it.” Senior LB Bobby Wagner Opening statement “At first we did okay, but we didn’t do well enough to win the game. We obviously know that when our offense is struggling that we have got to pick them up on our side of the ball. We did an okay job on that, but we could do better. I am sitting here listening to the interviews, and it’s not on the coaches. It’s on the players. Players are out there and coaches are coaches. It’s on us we have got to make plays we dropped three picks and missed tackles. The coaches can’t do anything for us out there. That’s our fault. We play the game; it’s not the coaches not on the players.” How tired is the defense? “I don’t think we were that winded we were holding up for the most part except for a couple of plays. I don’t think we were tired.” What more could you do? “There are things I could have done better to help the defense. I do feel like there is something I can do to help us win.” How was it when La Tech switched quarterbacks? “It wasn’t that much of a difference. I felt like all we had to do was talk. He tried to run it, and he wasn’t that fast so there really was no difference. We just got to step up and make plays.” Junior RB Robert Turbin On the game “I really don’t have much to say about the game. We lost again. Those are the facts. There are things we have to do, and that’s all I’ve got.” On not being in the game at the 3rd-and-1 with 5 minutes left “We have a great crew of running backs. Coach Tuiaki and Coach Baldwin, and me too, we all believe that all three of us can get the third and ones. Michael (Smith) has done it many times, and we trusted him to get this one. It wasn’t all his fault. It’s hard from the sideline to see what actually goes on, there may have been a missed block somewhere in there. There might have been something from the offensive line. We’ll just have to look at the film and see.” On not going for it on the last fourth and inches “The problem for going for it in that situation was being behind the 50-yard line. If we don’t get it, they have great field position. We’d rather punt it than have to deal with that. Our defense had done a decent job the whole game against their offense. We believed we’d be able to get a stop and get the ball back. I believe if we had gone for it, we would have gotten it, but it just isn’t a smart move to go for it in our in our own territory.”
