Hamud asking for landfill zone change as a ‘fall back position’

Issa Hamud asked the Cache County Council Tuesday night for something he hopes will never be needed: a change in zone and conditional use permit for the North Valley Landfill site near Clarkston. Hamud is director of the Logan City Environmental Department which operates the waste collection program for all of Cache County. He says after a long search a citizens advisory committee picked that site several years ago.”But after six years, and we’re in the seventh year, the chance of getting anything with Box Elder County, until recently, did not appear possible,” Hamud said. “So I approach you again to look into the option of opening this site. Some people say that is a leverage. It’s not a leverage, it’s a fall back position.”For a while it looked like Cache County would be sending its garbage to Box Elder County when the Logan Landfill reaches its capacity. Negotiations broke down but Hamud says a committee has been appointed in Box Elder County to determine if something can be worked out. If it does not he says plans will have to go forward for the north Cache Valley site.
