If the Presidential election were held this year would Barack Obama be re-elected? Utah State University Political Science Department Chairman Mike Lyons sees his chances as 50-50 right now but he says that situation could change at any time.As for Republicans, Lyons says Rick Perry is ahead in the polls but Mitt Romney is in a strong position.”I saw the debate on Monday night and I thought Romney performed well,” Lyons said. “Perry is the flavor of the month. He’s certainly popular with the conservative wing of the Republican party and he’s attracted a lot of media attention and he does have an interesting personality. “I can see where he has appeal among certain people in the Republican party. But I have serious doubts about how well he will wear over time.”Lyons says Perry came across as a bad impersonator of George W. Bush. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Thursday, he said Romney is a better candidate and seems to have more energy than he did four years ago.
