LOGAN, Utah – For the first time since 1997, the Utah State women’s soccer team defeated the University of Utah in Logan with a 1-0 strongly-defended win at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field on Friday. Over 1,000 fans celebrated both the win and Utah Youth Soccer Day with both teams signing autographs following the match. With the win, Utah State improves to 5-0-0 for the first time in school history. Utah falls to 0-3-1 this season. This was the Aggies’ first win against Utah in Logan since 1997. In that match, USU captured another overtime win, 1-0. With the win, the Aggies improve to 3-11 against Utah. The last time that Utah State defeated Utah was in 2009 when the Aggies captured yet another 1-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah behind a Shantel Flanary golden goal. All three of USU’s wins over the Utes have been by the score of 1-0. “It was a great win. I thought it was a fantastic match. Both teams had control of play at different parts of the match. Obviously, we both hit the post; we both had balls cleared on the line. We just gutted it out and took advantage of the opportunity. It was a well played match. We kept fighting till the end, and it paid off,” USU head coach Heather Cairns said. Both teams played splendid defense throughout the match. Senior goalkeeper Molli Merrill fought off seven Utah shots, making six saves. She and the Aggie backline earned their second shutout of the season. USU also shutout Weber State to open the season. “Our biggest goal of this match was a shutout, and we finally achieved that. Obviously, it took a total team effort not just the defensive line,” USU defender Natalie Norris said. Neither team got much going in the first 45 minutes of play. The first half ended with Utah State and Utah both having four shot. No one player had more than one shot in the half. In the second half, sophomore midfielder Kendra Pemberton threatened in the 74th minute when she hit the cross bar off of a free kick. In the 83rd minute, Lauren Dudley almost put the Utes up 1-0 with a shot that nearly crossed the goal line but was saved by Merrill. The only goal of the match was scored in the 85th minute of the match after a scoreless first half. Sophomore defender Taryn Rose started the sequence with a free kick that was deflected by Utah goalkeeper Hannah Turpen. Pemberton took the next shot that once again was deflected by the tough Utah defense. Sophomore forward Mari Miyashiro was in the right place at the right time, taking the last deflection and turning it into a 1-0 Utah State lead. The goal was the second of the season for Miyashiro and her first game-winning goal of the season. Prior to today, senior forward Shantel Flanary had all of USU’s game-winning goals. “We defended really well on free kicks today,” Miyashiro said. “When he had our chance we took it. It feels so awesome to win it here at our home field.” The Aggies are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 4 against former Big West foe Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m. The Titans take on BYU on Friday night.
