LOGAN, Utah – Breanne Van Every recorded a match-high 17 kills to help Idaho Staterally for a five-set win (21-25, 17-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-12) against Utah State here Thursday night in the first match of the 2011 Utah State Invitational. Utah State (1-3) led two games to none and was up 19-15 in the third set when Idaho State (2-3) began its rally by scoring six of the next seven points en route to the 26-24 win. The Bengals then led by as many as eight points in the fourth set coasting to the 25-18 victory and scored five of the final seven points to break a 10-10 tie in the fifth set to complete the come-from-behind win. Junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) tied her career-high with 16 kills and had a career-high eight block assists to lead Utah State, while junior libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) posted a career-high 26 digs. Freshman setter Paige Neves (Otto, Wyo.) added four kills, eight digs, four block assists and 32 assists in her first career start. Utah State also got a pair of double-doubles from its outside hitters as senior All-American Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) finished with 11 kills and 11 digs, and junior Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) had 11 kils, 13 digs and five block assists. Freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah) also had a solid match for USU as she posted season-highs with five kills and eight block assists. Sorensen and White each posted three kills in the first set as Utah State hit .206 (10-3-34) and held Idaho State to a .000 (12-12-42) hitting percentage. Sorensen added six more kills in set two as Utah State used a 12-5 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 19-13 advantage. USU hit .400 (13-3-25) here and held the Bengals to a .000 (9-9-33) hitting percentage. Utah State seemed to be on its way to a three-set sweep as it held a 19-15 advantage in the third set before Idaho State used a 6-1 run to take a 21-20 lead and eventually posted the 26-24 win. ISU hit .100 (14-9-50) in the third set and the Aggies hit just .068 (12-9-44). In the fourth set, Idaho State used a 12-3 run turning a 9-8 deficit into a commanding 20-12 lead as the Bengals coasted to the seven-point win. ISU hit .205 (14-6-39) in the fourth set and USU hit .138 (10-6-29). Utah State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the fifth and final set, but Idaho State responded by scoring six of the next eight points and never trailed again as it closed the match out with a 5-2 run for the 15-12 win. The Bengals hit .312 (14-4-32) in the final set and USU hit .227 (6-1-22). Utah State finished the match with a .188 (51-22-154) hitting percentage and Idaho State hit .117 (63-40-196). USU also had 12.5 more team blocks (17.5-5.0) and seven more digs (77-70), while ISU posted two more service aces (5-3). Utah State will return to action on Friday,Sept. 2 when it plays Syracuse (3-0) in the second day of the Gossner Foodssponsored Utah State Invitational at 7 p.m. The first match of the night will have ISU playing Texas State (2-1) at 5 p.m. -USU-
