Sheriff’s office stresses gun safety after BB gun death

Cache County Sheriff’s deputies have identified the young Lewiston girl who died after her nine-year-old brother allegedly shot her in the head with a BB gun. Sheriffs Lt Chad Jensen identified the girl as Karely Arzeta-Reyes. He says she suffered a fatal head injury after the shooting last Thursday, August 18. Jensen says the girl’s 11 year-old and nine-year old brothers were pumping their BB guns and shooting her with air.Jensen says the Cache County Attorney’s office is reviewing the information for possible charges. Meanwhile he has a warning for young people and BB guns.”It’s a gun. Anything that shoots a projectile is a gun,” Jensen says. “They shouldn’t be pointed at people or houses or vehicles. I’m not saying people shouldn’t have BB guns or that kids shouldn’t have fun with their BB guns. They just need to be responsible, need to be supervised and treat it like it’s a gun and not a toy.”Jensen says the girl was taken to the Franklin County Medical Center first then transferred to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City where she died of her injuries.
