Utah State Football Fine Tunes Friday

Aggie Fact of the Day: A total of seven returners on Utah State’s 2011 roster started all 12 games last season in senior linebacker Bobby Wagner, senior offensive lineman Philip Gapelu, senior defensive lineman Quinn Garner, senior linebacker Kyle Gallagher, senior offensive lineman Funaki Asisi, senior defensive end Levi Koskan and sophomore offensive center Tyler Larsen. Aggie Tidbit of the Day: USU’s season-opener at Auburn on Saturday, Sept. 3 is the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and Tigers… It also is the sixth team in the current Southeastern Conference, and the Aggies will be playing their first SEC opponent since Arkansas in 2006… USU will have played half of the SEC teams, joining Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky and LSU, while yet to play Florida, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football fine tuned things in Friday’s practice in preparation for the squad’s second scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday morning. The Aggies were on the practice field in full pads Friday morning, practicing just under two hours. Utah State head coach Gary Andersen noted that he particularly impressed with the Aggie defense’s pass rush Friday, while other defensive highlights included junior cornerback Jumanne Robertson with an interception returned for a touchdown. USU’s offensive standout from Friday was sophomore running back Robert Marshall. Andersen also announced a tentative depth chart for Saturday’s scrimmage. {attached as pdf} Saturday’s scrimmage is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. {see below for complete practice schedule, as of 3 p.m., 8/17/11} USU in preparation for the 2011 season opener on Saturday, Sept. 3 at No. 19 Auburn on national television at 10 a.m. (MT). All practices of the preseason are open to the public. Fans are encouraged to stay in the stands when the team is practicing on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium and in the bleachers at the practice field. All open practices are subject to change. USU’s preseason concludes with a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Noon as part of Utah State Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey’s Foods. The event provides fans a chance to meet USU football players and coaches, participate in games and activities as well as purchase and pick-up season tickets. Activities sponsored by Macey’s Foods will begin on the South Concourse of Romney Stadium. Season tickets as well as two-game packages will be also available for purchase at the USU Football Family Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Romney Stadium Box Office, which is located on the South end of Romney Stadium. After its season-opener at Auburn on Saturday, Sept. 3, Utah State’s home opener is on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. (MT), taking on in-state foe Weber State, marking the first time that USU and WSU have squared off since 2001, and Utah State leads the all-time series, 11-1. The Aggie-Wildcat match-up will have special meaning for Andersen, who will be facing his mentor, Weber State head coach Ron McBride. Andersen played for McBride at Utah in 1985-86.
