Loaves and Fishes meal provided for community

The next in a series of community meals hosted by “Loaves and Fishes” is Saturday, August 20, from 11:30 am to 1 pm at Logan’s First Presbyterian Church. The idea grew from a community holiday dinner sponsored by Global Neighbor, a local non-profit, started Rachel von Niederhausern and her brother Adam Whitney. “It’s definitely been a group effort but over the last year my brother and I with our non-profit wanted to put on a dinner at Christmas time for the community because we didn’t really know of another one going on. “Many organizations do some at Thanksgiving in the valley.” The effort to organize the Christmas Day dinner went forward in partnership with Cache Community Connections while Pastor Paul Heins volunteered the Presbyterian Church for the site of the event. “We got such a great response,” said von Neiderhausen. “We had over 200 volunteers who came on Christmas Day and sacrificed their Christmas to be part of it.” From there Global Neighbor and First Presbyterian Church wanted to continue to provide a meal monthly to help those in need and also to bring the Cache Valley Community together in food and fellowship. “The meal is at the Presbyterian Church but it is much more than an event just at our church,” said Pastor Heins. “The intention behind it is to draw as many people and different groups from around the valley to work together. There are important things that draw us all together no matter what our faith tradition, no matter what our beliefs may be or perspective on life. It’s very much a community-wide effort that involves a lot of different groups and a lot of different people.” The first of the “Loaves and Fishes” meals was held in May and every month since. The First Presbyterian Church and Global Neighbor provided initial funding for the monthly meals. Food provisions also come from the Bishop’s Storehouse and Cache Food Pantry as available. All individuals are encouraged to attend the meals.
