Former USU Football Player Spencer Johnson Inks Free Agent Deal With Philadelphia Eagles

LOGAN, Utah – Former Utah State football player Spencer Johnson signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles Friday night. With Philadelphia, Johnson, an offensive lineman, will reunite with former Aggie teammate, cornerback Curtis Marsh, who was drafted by the Eagles with the 26th pick of the third round, the 90th overall selection, in the NFL Draft in April.”It’s been a dream of mine every since I was a little kid to play in the NFL. When I was little, I had hoped to be a basketball player, but then I realized that I couldn’t shoot a basketball very well so that wasn’t going to happen and I had to change my aspirations,” Johnson said. “It is a great honor to play for a tremendous organization like the Philadelphia Eagles, plus I reunite with my best friend through college, Curtis Marsh. To be able to play football more is great, but to play with him makes it even better. I’m just excited to get up there and get to work.”Johnson’s signing makes six members of the 2011 USU senior class in the NFL, joining Marsh who was drafted, along with free agents quarterback Diondre Borel inked with the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers but will play wide receiver, while defensive back Rajric Coleman signed with the Buffalo Bills, cornerback Chris Randle signed with the Dallas Cowboys and long snapper Pat Scales inked with the Baltimore Ravens.”We’re extremely excited for Spencer to get this opportunity to continue his career at the next level,” USU head coach Gary Andersen said. “He is a quality young man and a promising player with a lot of potential. We are glad that he gets to be with a fellow Aggie in Curtis Marsh and proud that we now have six members of the 2011 senior class in the NFL.”Johnson, a native of Lancaster, Calif. (Antelope Valley HS), was a four-year staple on the USU offensive line, leading the 2010 seniors with 39 career starts while playing in 46 games in his career. Johnson was a second-team Phil Steele’s College Football Preview Preseason all-WAC honoree in 2010. His 2010 season was hampered by an injury, and he only made eight starts after starting all 12 games of 2009.
