Celtic Games and Highland Festival invade heritage center

The Celts and the Welch and the Irish will be a wee bit more prominent in the Cache Valley on Saturday, August 27, when the American West Heritage Center hosts the Third Annual Cache Valley Celtic Festival and Highland Games. Bob Gallimore of the Utah Scottish Association is also a member of the Cache Valley Celtic Festival Committee. “People of all ages and all ethnicities have a great time, there is just so much happening,” said Gallimore. “We will have athletic competitions for those that like things like the X-Games. These are very ancient in their traditions. They involve what is the iconic event, the caber toss, plus a shot put type event using stones. The hammer throw, which is another Olympic caliber event that uses an old flexible shaft, much like a blacksmith’s hammer. There is a whole series of nine throwing contests.” There will be a highland dancing demonstration, a bagpiper’s competition from 9 a.m. throughout the day. Several vendors will be on hand with merchandise and food. “We will also have some educational presentations on a variety of topics. Through the America West Heritage Center we want to focus on some of the back stories of the Celtic peoples as they influenced this part of the world. “One of them is on the Welsh origins of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, which a lot of people don’t know about. Another is on the Scottish roots of the origins of the Boy Scouts.” Gates open at 9 a.m. with activities non-stop until the evening concert of Celtic music begins at 6 p.m. There are no advanced ticket sales this year; they will be available at the gate. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students 12 to 18 and anyone 11 and under is free. The ticket price includes the evening concert. Concert only tickets are $5.
