LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football will take to the turf of Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium to begin preparations for the Aggies’ 113th season on Monday, Aug. 8, opening action from 3:30-5:30 p.m.USU will open fall camp and the third season under head coach Gary Andersen on Monday, beginning its five-day acclimation period in helmets, practice jerseys and shorts for the first two practices. The Aggies will don shoulder pads for the next two practices before moving up to Friday’s first full pads practice and the first two-a-day on Saturday. “It’s great to have the kids back in town and back into action,” Andersen said. “From what I can tell, they’ve had a highly productive summer, and we’re excited to get going in camp. We’re expecting a highly competitive, high-energy first practice.”USU will practice on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium on Monday, before shifting to the practice field for the rest of the week. Monday’s practice and all practices of the preseason are open to the public. Fans are encouraged to stay in the stands when the team is practicing on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium and in the bleachers at the practice field.Andersen and the Aggies return 46 letterwinners (29 offense, 16 defense, one special teams), including 17 starters (10 offense, six defense, one special teams), from last season’s 4-8 overall mark, and 2-6 in WAC play, in Andersen’s second season at the helm of the Aggie program. Among the Aggie returners is Western Athletic Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Bobby Wagner, who is on several preseason watch lists for various awards. Also among the returners is sophomore running back/kick returner Kerwynn Williams, who returns after setting several NCAA, WAC and school records last season in the kick return game and is also on numerous preseason watch lists. Sophomore center Tyler Larsen anchors the offensive line and is a preseason Rimington Trophy Watch List member, honoring the top center in college football.Also returning for USU is several players who missed all or most of the 2010 season with an injury, including junior wide receiver Matt Austin, senior tight end Kellen Bartlett, senior offensive lineman Robert Hill, junior wide receiver Stanley Morrison, junior cornerback Jamaine Olson, senior running back Michael Smith, junior running back Robert Turbin and senior linebacker Reuben Willis. USU’s preseason concludes with a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Noon as part of Utah State Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey’s Foods. The event provides fans a chance to meet USU football players and coaches, participate in games and activities as well as purchase and pick-up season tickets. Activities sponsored by Macey’s Foods will begin on the South Concourse of Romney Stadium. Season tickets as well as two-game packages will be also available for purchase at the USU Football Family Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Romney Stadium Box Office, which is located on the South end of Romney Stadium.After its season-opener at Auburn on Saturday, Sept. 3, Utah State’s home opener is on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. (MT), taking on in-state foe Weber State, marking the first time that USU and WSU have squared off since 2001, and Utah State leads the all-time series, 11-1. The Aggie-Wildcat match-up will have special meaning for Andersen, who will be facing his mentor, Weber State head coach Ron McBride.
