ATK lays off 100 after NASA cutbacks

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah company is laying off about 100 people because of the end of the space shuttle program.ATK spokeswoman Trina Patterson says the last day for the employees was Tuesday. The employees were told in June.The layoffs are primarily at the company’s Utah facilities but some were in Alabama and Florida.Along with the layoffs, about a half-dozen people were transferred to other locations.The company manufactured the rocket boosters for the space shuttles, which were put out of service by NASA after a final shuttle flight last month.Patterson says the company is continuing to invest in the space industry, including the work on a private space rocket and a launch pad for NASA rockets.
