Ballam: something special every evening in final week of opera festival

This is the final week for the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre Company and general director Michael Ballam says starting Tuesday there will be something special in the Ellen Eccles Theatre every evening through Saturday, August 6. It’s the Mozart Requiem Tuesday and Wednesday where the UFOMT soloists and orchestra will join Craig Jessop’s American Festival Chorus to present the final work of Mozart. Ballam says donations have been coming in and work has started again on renovating the old Utah Theater which now houses a Wurlitzer organ valued at $1.6 million. Construction is in process to complete a new lobby, restrooms, dressing rooms and rehearsal space. “Hopefully we’ll be able to complete the entire project,” Ballam says, “which will mean we will start showing eight operas during the summer. We’ll probably do three musicals throughout the year together with recitals and maybe some straight plays. “What my dream is is that the Utah Theater will be alive and occupied every night of the year.” Meanwhile, he says, this is the last week to attend performances of Oliver, South Pacific, Boris Godunov, and Don Giovanni.
