Changes may be in store for how school boards are chosen

Utah State School Board member Tami Pyfer agrees with those who would like to see a different way of choosing members of school boards. Right now the Governor chooses from the candidates. Pyfer says State Senator Howard Stephenson, R-District 11, wants to make those races partisan and have school board candidates go through the caucus system. “Lyle Hillyard, our local Senator, spoke very adamantly against this system,” Pyfer said on KVNU’s Crosstalk show Tuesday, “and pointed to the fact that constituents don’t want that, the people who he has polled, staunch Republicans he said, don’t want partisan elections in a state’s school board race. Nor do they want in local school board races.” Pyfer says one senator wants school board races to remain non-partisan and have them held every other year when the non-partisan municipal elections are held.
