Juveniles arrested after night crime spree

Three juveniles were taken to a detention center Thursday after a night of stealing trucks and other items in the Benson, Smithfield and Hyde Park. Cache County Sheriff Lt. Chad Jensen says two males, ages 14 and 16, stole a pickup truck from a farm in Benson at approximately 1 a.m. According to reports they couldn’t figure out how to turn on the headlights; as a result they ran off the roadway, down a riverbank and crashed into some trees. The boys then walked to another Benson farm where they stole another truck. Jensen says sheriff’s deputies found the stolen vehicle at the Maverick on Hyde Park Lane at about 4 a.m. A short pursuit followed and the truck pulled into a Hyde Park residence where the driver jumped from the parked truck and ran from deputies, leaving two other juveniles behind. Jensen says the boys were arrested and the driver was arrested a short time later. An investigation revealed the three juveniles had been traveling around Smithfield and Hyde Park stealing property from unlocked vehicles. Jensen says dozens of items were recovered including a laptop computer, several knives, a 12-gauge shotgun, other hunting and electronic equipment, and a small amount of cash. He says an additional handgun was recovered in Benson later on Thursday that was related to one of the suspects. The boys are being held on multiple charges including theft of a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm, burglary of a building and vehicles, theft, and other misdemeanor charges.
