Bear Lake Fun Run aims to raise money for cancer research

With a goal of $6,000 in mind, a 5K fun-run will be held Saturday, June 25 in Garden City, with all proceeds going to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.Jessica Ward, organizer for the event, said she didn’t want to specify what kind of cancer run this would be, since all survivors of cancer need support.”I think money needs to be going to all cancers not just the ones that people have gotten more publicity for,” Ward said. “I don’t ever see walks for gallbladder cancer, or testicular cancer or brain cancer, and I think they also need any help they can get.”This is the second annual Bear Lake Run for Cancer, and Ward is hoping to have over 200 participants this year. She said the run is family friendly and is a, “great opportunity to teach children about being charitable.”The race starts at 8 a.m. and the cost is $30 for ages 15 and above, $20 for ages 9-14 and kids 8 and younger can participate for free.Organizing a cancer walk is something Ward said she has always wanted to do because it is a topic that is close to her heart. She said two of her aunts are cancer survivors and just this year her uncle and her mother have been diagnosed with cancer as well.”There are only so many meals we can make and service we can physically do to help before it eventually dies out. We have to be part of the bigger picture and fight it at the roots. I also think it is such a good way to help the healing process,” Ward said. The Huntsman Center was chosen because of it’s good reputation and Ward said she feels like that organization is really trying to find a solution to the cancer epidemic. There will be a variety of door prizes that Taryl Barnett, another organizer of the event, put together. Since it is a fun run, there won’t be first and second place prizes but drawings and prizes for everyone. She said she has gotten great support from the community with donations.Barnett hopes to put together 10-20 prize bags that will include things like Angie’s gift cards, iFrogz headphones and Sports Academy week passes. She said there will also be fruit, snacks and a free shirt with registration. For more information or to register, call 435-946-8413 or E-mail
