Increased gas prices causing increased demand at food pantry

Local letter carriers helped Stamp Out Hunger to the tune of more than 47,000 pounds of food last weekend. Cache Community Food Pantry Coordinator Matt Whittaker says that was about 10,000 more pounds of food than came in for the same food drive last year.Whittaker says the food is needed because things have been busier at the food pantry.”People come down and it’s the same thing, gas prices and food prices are going up,” Whittaker says. “If you’ve got a fixed income, where do you pull that extra money from? So that’s what’s bringing people down and they need some help.”Meanwhile, Whittaker says money is badly needed to get the food pantry’s building project off the ground.
