More than 300 new Utah laws taking effect

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah residents can now purchase bigger fireworks, shop for genuine raw honey and judge a school’s performance by a simple letter grade. Those changes are among almost 350 new laws passed by the Legislature during the 2011 general session that became effective Tuesday. One law permits people to buy fireworks that launch higher into the air and fire multiple rounds. The change was made to discourage people from bringing illegal fireworks into the state.Another law distinguishes between raw honey that has not been pasteurized and pure honey, which is often heated to prevent crystallization.Schools will now receive letter grades based on factors such as test scores. Critics say the system is overly simplistic. Supporters say it’s an easy way to monitor school performance.
