Utah State Track And Field Garners Nine First-Place Finishes On Final Day Of Idaho-Utah Border Clash

BOISE, Idaho – Utah State men and women’s track and field teams captured nine event titles as part of 40 top-five finishes Saturday on the final day of the Idaho-Utah Border Clash in Boise, Idaho. Remaining undefeated with his fifth win in the 800m this season was senior Jason Holt, breaking the tape at 1:54.07 while fellow senior Mercer Owen (1:54.67) and sophomore Tyler Killpack (1:55.85) finished in second and fourth-places in the same event. Also winning their event for USU were seniors Ashlee Cannon in the 100m hurdles (13.96), Heidi Peterson’s personal-best in the 400m hurdles (58.23), Alexis Meyer in the 800m 2:13.49) and Clint Silcock in the high jump with a mark of 2.08m (6-09.75). Junior Spela Hus won the shot put with a throw of 13.87m (45-06.25) while sophomore Silas Pimentel collected wins in the 100m (10.55) and 200m (21.27) and fellow sophomore Bri Campbell won the high jump, clearing 1.62m (5-03.75). Junior Madison Jensen cleared the same height as Campbell but took second on a judge’s decision. Other Aggie women placing in the top five included sophomore Aubrie Haymore taking third in the 100m with her personal-best time of 12.04, freshman Chari Hawkins who took fourth (14.33) in the 100m hurdles just ahead of Peterson (14.38). Junior Katelyn Heiner garnered a fourth-place finish in the 400m (58.23) as senior Camille Fehlberg and freshman Cassie Berg ended in fourth and fifth in the 400m hurdles with times of 1:05.82 and 1:06.51, respectively. Taking third in the triple jump was junior Julia Stewart with a mark of 11.53m (37-10.00) along with fellow junior Rachelle St. Jeor placing fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 3.50m (11-05.75). A trio of Utah State women garnered fifth-place including sophomore McKayla Williams in the 800m (2:23.97), sophomore Jen Schiess in the high jump with a leap of 1.52m (4-11.75) and senior Shannon Prince in the shot put with a throw of 12.39m (40-07.75). For the USU men, taking second-place were seniors Armahd Lewis in the 200m (21.44), Eric Larson’s personal-best in the 5000m (15:03.76) and sophomore Eric Follett in the high jump, clearing 1.98m (6-06.00). Junior Jeff Alley tabbed a third-place finish in the 100m (10.96) just ahead of freshman Mikey Payne (10.98) while freshman AJ Boully was third in the 110m hurdles with a 14.72 time and sophomore Jordan McMurray was close behind in fifth with a 15.28 time. Boully also finished fourth in the 400m hurdles (55.85). Other Aggie men in the top five included seniors Hunter Nelson and Nick Bolinder taking third and fourth in the 5000m with marks of 15:16.22 and 15:22.84, respectively. Junior Chio Lopez (4:07.79) took home a third-place accolade in the 1500m less than a second ahead of freshman Devin Lang in fourth (4:08.17). Junior Joe Canavan finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.63m (51-03.50). In the triple jump, freshman Kenny Hamlett was fourth with a mark of 13.88m (45-06.50) and fellow freshman CJ O’Neal was fifth with a 13.36m (43-10.00). The men’s 4x100m relay team crossed the line in second-place with a time of 41.65 while the women’s 4x100m relay took third with a 47.47 time. The men’s team consisted of Lewis, Pimentel and freshmen Parker Bluth and Tanner Hunt, while the women’s team was made up of Haymore, Hawkins along with sophomores Bailee Whitworth and Mercedes Blackwood. Junior Kim Quinn will warp up the Aggies’ weekend action by running the 5000m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif., on Sunday, May 1.
