Pair arrested in connection with botched beer theft

LOGAN– An adult male and a minor were arrested at 2:53 a.m. April 13 at the 7-Eleven at 405 N. Main St., following the pair’s attempt to steal a case of beer and a threat from the adult to bring the incident to gunpoint.Ahmed Jama, 25, was arrested and booked on seven counts, all of which were initially spurred by the 15-year-old’s attempt to steal the case of beer while Jama tried to distract two clerks, said Lt. Brad Franke of the Logan Police Department.Jama is also accused of witness tampering and unlawful possession of a credit card, both third-degree felonies; unlawful sale or supply of alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor; and threats against life or property, a class B misdemeanor. He was booked into the Cache County Jail on $10,000 bail and arraigned in 1st District Court. His scheduled appearance was canceled Tuesday morning, with no further date yet rescheduled, a court representative said later that afternoon.The juvenile was arrested on counts including felony retail theft due to prior convictions and minor in possession of alcohol, a class B misdemeanor. He has since been booked into the Cache Valley Youth Detention Center.Franke said that Jama attempted to distract the one of the two female employees as the 15-year-old tried to carry the case of beer out of the store. The attempted theft led to further trouble.”As the other employee was in the process of calling the police department, Jama made a the threat to return to the store with a gun and shoot them,” Franke said. The employees responded by barricading themselves in the store’s back room.
