Lady Mustangs advance to State Championship, defeating Maple Mountain 49-46

The Mountain Crest lady Mustangs will represent Cache Valley and Region 5 in the State Championship after a tougher-than-expected 49-46 win over Maple Mountain in the 4A State Semifinals at Salt Lake Community College. Both teams were off to a very sloppy start that saw both teams combine for a total of 52 turnovers, with both teams having 14 a piece by halftime. Maple Mountain gave the Mustangs all they could handle and then some. Jessica Benson tallied 24 points for the Golden Eagles, shooting a crisp 6-7 from 3 ball land and grabbing 5 rebounds. Benson hit a deep 3 with 3:30 to go in the game to give Maple a three point advantage, but then the Mustangs took over with 9-0 run. Maple continued to fight and claw their way back, but the play of the game came from Juliette McCann. With the Golden Eagles down two with 1:20 to go in the game, with the ball and seemingly ready to take momentum right back, McCann notched her fifth steal of the game and drove coast to coast for a layup. Along with with McCann’s great defensive play, Jordi Willden and Emily Moore hit clutch free throws and that sealed a birth to a State Championship date with the 20-1 Springville Red Devils who advanced with a physical 53-49 win over Sky View. Willden and Moore both had 14 points to lead the Mustangs in scoring while Brianna Jessop tallied 7 rebounds.
